Tricks Class 3 week short course

Next Starting Date: Please email an expression of interest

The 3 week tricks class is designed for dogs aged 16 weeks and up.  We have no upper age limit.  Each class is limited to 4 dogs and will run for approximately 1 hour each week.

A prerequisite of this class is completion of either All Pets Education & Training Puppy School or K9 Manners, or entry via individual assessment.

This class is designed for fun.  All dogs will be at varying levels and will learn tricks that are appropriate to their current skill level.

Tricks can be a great way to reinforce the dog & owner bond.  When you are with your dog and training a trick, you are not only having fun, but you are also engaging with your dog in one of the best human & dog bonding behaviours - Play!

Tricks are also useful - Honestly who doesn't want a dog that can close doors, drawers and fridges for them, turn lights on/off, bring you your shoes, pick up the rubbish and put it  in the bin, and toys in the toy box?

Tricks can be used to engage fearful or shy dogs, exercise through mind games our working or high energy dogs and entertain the minds of those that are on restricted exercise or crate rest.  We can even teach tricks that can help in the rehabilitation or physiotherapy program of dogs recovering from injury.

Have a look at the two videos below - these are of my own dogs and just some of their trick repertoire.

If there is a specific trick that you would like to learn with your dog, let me know, and I will be happy to help work out a way to teach it with you and your dog.  All dogs are different, and many have different learning styles and speeds.

We can teach tricks by luring (using the food/toy to guide them), targeting (use a target - hand/object), capturing (capture a naturally occurring behaviour and put it on cue) or shaping (marking and treating for small increments of a final behaviour).  Don't worry if these methods sound complicating, they really aren't, and our primary aim in tricks class is to have fun!
