Materials Needed:
- An opaque box
- A small article (object) for indication
- Dog food or treats
Steps:
Introduce the Box:
- Place the box in a quiet area.
- Allow your dog to explore the box without any distractions.
Indication Training:
- Place the article inside the box.
- Encourage your dog to sniff or point at the article by dropping treats on to the target
- Reward your dog many pieces of food dropped one after the other into the the box over the target - these pieces should initially be dropped in so quickly that there is no time to lift the head out between pieces.
- Gradually slow the rate of reinforcement with a small pause here and there to build the indication (when they keep their nose) on the article.
Building Duration:
- Gradually increase the time your dog needs to indicate on the article before receiving a reward.
- Start with a few seconds and slowly build up over time to about 5-10 seconds.
Adding Distractions
- Introduce mild distractions (e.g., sounds, movements) while your dog is indicating on the article.
- Reward your dog immediately if they stay focused on the task.
- Increase the intensity of distractions gradually.
Consistency and Patience:
- Practice regularly in short sessions 3-5 mins.
- Be patient and consistent with rewards.
