Fun Games Kids and Dogs can Play
Fun Games Kids and Dogs can play
Fetch
One of the easiest, most enjoyable games for many dogs and children. Toss a ball or toy (never use a stick as these can cause nasty injuries). Reward the dog when he/she brings back the object and toss another ball or toy.
Tug of War
Tug can be a great game for kids and dogs. However there are some rules.
1. The child starts the game.
2. Any teeth on skin / clothing contact and the game finishes
3. Teach the dog to “Give” the tug up, buy using treats or another toy.
Hide-N-Seek
Children love hiding and having the dog come find them, and what is more the dog likes finding the kids. Set the kids up with a few treats, have them show the dog and then run and hide. Release the dog to find the children. Initially have the kids hide in easy spots, but as your dog catches on, they will have their work cut out for them.
Bubbles
Have the child blow bubbles for the dog to chase, pop and have fun with. You can even use a bubble machine to create enough bubbles for child and dog to have fun popping.
Check out your pets stores – You can find bacon, beef and chocolate flavoured bubbles.
Backyard Agility
Set up some hurdles (broom sticks/pool noodles etc), a tunnel, plant stakes for weave poles.
Make up your own courses and time you and your pooch around the circuit.
Trick Training
Training tricks is fun! Have the child teach the dog the basics such as Shake, Roll Over, Spin before moving on to some more elaborate and challenging tricks. Check out the kikopup youtube channel for more inspiration.
Find It
Have the child hide a yummy treat or favourite toy – let the dog watch initially before sending them to find it. Once again, as the dog catches on it will get much quicker at finding it.
